Stay unplugged longer with the new DELL H018N 5405mAh 2700mAh Li-ion Battery. This 14.8V Rechargeable Li-ion battery can replace the original system battery or be used as a spare. DELL computer batteries life (and recharge times) will vary based on many factors including screen brightness, applications, features, power management, battery conditioning and other customer preferences.

The Dell Latitude Z is a study in contrasts—and an unusual mix of laptop styles. It has a huge 16-inch high-definition screen housed in a 4.5-pound chassis that’s slimmer than most ultraportables. Advanced features abound, yet you’ll give up some basics, such as a built-in optical drive and memory-card slots. This laptop isn't easy to classify—nor is its price easy to justify—but for business users who want a big screen in a light-to-carry package, the Latitude Z certainly fills a need.

The design of the Latitude Z is unique. While it is thin and light, it is definitely not small, and that hampers its portability. The angular chassis is barely over a half-inch thick, yet the 16-inch wide-screen LCD gives it an expansive 15.5x10.7-inch footprint. The shell is done in a tastefully understated satin finish with a blackish/brownish/reddish hue. ( Cheap Y596M 14.8V,8 cell 4 cell Laptop Batteries, battery for DELL 312-0928) Dell opted for a thin profile in place of incorporating a built-in optical drive, but the company includes a slot-loading, external 8x DVD±RW burner in the base package. The drive connects to the eSATA/USB combo port and requires no AC adapter of its own. Onboard connectivity is limited to that combo port, a second USB port, a LAN jack, a headphone jack, and a DisplayPort connector. There are no slots to speak of—not even a flash-card reader—which could be a deal-breaker for some users.

Of course, the real selling point (aside from the thin, light design) is the screen, and it does not disappoint. The 1,600x900 HD resolution and LED backlighting help photos and videos come alive on the 16-inch display, and text is crisp and legible. The viewing angle of the panel is also the best we’ve seen on a portable, with no color shift as you move off-axis, even with video playback. As is appropriate for a business-oriented machine, (Cheap PA3782U-1BRS 10.8V,6 cell 3 cell Laptop Batteries, battery for TOSHIBA PA3784U-1BRS) the screen has a matte finish to reduce glare and reflection, yet it’s subtle enough not to rob any clarity. Audio reproduction from the stereo speakers is clean and clear, although, as expected from such a thin machine, lacking in bass reproduction. Still, it’s fine for business audio and even movie enjoyment.

The big screen naturally means room for a full-size keyboard, and Dell went with a Chiclet style with slightly cupped keys. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on, with the right amount of up/down key travel, and we love how white backlighting beneath the keys springs to life when you start to type. The expansive area surrounding the keyboard is uncluttered, housing just a fingerprint reader and an oversize, gesture-enabled touch pad clad in a low-friction matte finish that blends into its surroundings. Above the Function key row, you’ll find backlit, touch-sensitive volume and mute controls, but no multimedia-control keys. Dell also omitted a Function-key combination for common media controls like next track and last track, so you’ll have to rely on the application’s shuttle controls. Making up for this somewhat is Dell’s handy TouchEdge launch panel. Simply touch the small rectangle on the screen bezel to open a customizable quick-launch toolbar for your favorite Web sites or oft-used applications.

Above the screen is a 2-megapixel Webcam that does more than let you videoconference: It also lets you capture and store business cards and even full-size documents with the preloaded Dell Capture utility. For business cards, select Business Card Scan from the menu, then hold the card in front of the camera until it fills the onscreen frame. When the card is properly positioned, the camera automatically snaps a picture of it, ( Cheap ML31-1005 10.8V,11.25V,6 cell 9 cell Laptop Batteries, battery for ASUS AL31-1005) and the software’s optical character recognition (OCR) engine does a very good job of intelligently parsing the information on the card. It places the card's name, phone numbers, e-mail address, and so on into the proper fields in a contact entry, which you can then export to Outlook,, Windows Contacts, Microsoft Excel, HTML, or plain text. As with all business-card readers, you’ll have to proofread the entry to make sure characters were recognized correctly, and more exotic cards with dark or patterned backgrounds don’t capture well. But overall, we were impressed with the accuracy of the feature, and we especially like being able to digitize contact information instantaneously, without having to carry and connect a business-card scanner.

The Dell Capture utility can also be used to grab an image file of letter- and legal-size documents. You go through the same process of lining up the document in front of the camera, and the software automatically snaps the image. In our trials, (Cheap PA3783U-1BRS 10.8V,6 cell 3 cell Laptop Batteries, battery for TOSHIBA PABAS218) we found the software a little quick to snap, grabbing the image while we were still trying to get the document properly positioned. And note that you’ll be creating a static image file (not an editable or text-searchable file), and that you’ll have to download the free Adobe Reader utility to use the view-as-PDF feature. Still, it’s a handy way to make a convenience copy of a document for future reference. Also, bear in mind that third-party programs such as Nuance PaperPort 12 are able to perform OCR even on images of documents captured by a camera such as this.

If you want to do something as ordinary as, well, using the camera for video chats, the Dell Webcam Central utility lets you do that, too. It offers nine resolution choices, ranging from 160x120 to 1,600x1,200, as well as a self-timer. The camera produced very good images under bright lighting conditions, with accurate colors and good detail. (ASUS A42-G73 Laptop Battery)In dimmer light, with the subject lit by just a table lamp, the image was reddish but usable. In a darkened room, with just the light from the screen, the camera couldn’t deliver a usable image.

Conveniently, in addition to the fingerprint reader, Dell includes its FaceAware utility, so you can use the Webcam to log on to the PC. The 32-bit version of the Windows 7 Professional operating system comes standard (and was on our system), or you can upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for $85. Roxio Creator DE 10.3, CyberLink PowerDVD DX, and a 60-day trial for Norton Internet Security round out the software bundle. Our configuration came with a generous three-year warranty with onsite service and priority ProSupport tech support.

In keeping with the wireless theme, our configuration also came with the Dell Wireless Docking Station. Order this peripheral, which resembles a Wi-Fi router, and Dell installs an ultra-wideband (UWB) card in the Latitude Z and preloads the drivers. All you need to do is launch the Dell Wireless USB utility that comes preloaded on the system and enter the PIN printed on the label of your dock. Thereafter, whenever the Latitude Z is within range (up to 30 feet) it will associate with the wireless dock and give you access to any peripherals connected to it. The dock includes a FireWire port, two USB ports, and a DVI monitor connector on the back, plus two more USB ports and headphone and mic jacks on the front. It took us mere minutes to set up the wireless dock, and we were able to use an external monitor and connect USB memory devices without a tangle of cables snaking from the Latitude Z. (Of course, they snake to the dock instead, so again, the “wireless” claim is only to a point.) If that’s not enough wireless for you, the Latitude Z includes Bluetooth and 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity standard.

The Latitude Z also includes Dell’s Latitude ON capability, a password-protected preboot environment that lets you access your e-mail, contacts, calendar, and the Web without booting into Windows. The shell even runs on its own 600MHz processor, but in use, we feel Dell could have skipped this feature and shaved some money from the machine’s price. ( Cheap PA3786U-1BRS 10.8V,6 cell Laptop Batteries, battery for TOSHIBA PA3787U-1BRS) Unlike with Windows Vista, interminable boot times are less of an issue with Windows 7. In fact, the Latitude Z launches into Windows in 45 seconds, but Latitude ON takes more than a minute to load. Yes, if you put Latitude ON into suspend mode it reloads in a quick 10 seconds, but Windows relaunches from Sleep mode in 10 seconds, too.

The other chink in this cutting-edge armor, alas, is the machine’s performance. The slim chassis means Dell had to go with Intel’s ultra-low-voltage processors: the 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 with 2GB of RAM in the base model, or the 1.6GHz SU9600 with 4GB of RAM, as in our test configuration. The only graphics choice is the integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD.

On Futuremark’s PCMark Vantage test, which measures overall system performance, the Latitude Z scored 3,553. How that score stacks up depends on your perspective. If you’re thinking of the Latitude Z instead of a smaller-screen business thin-and-light, you’ll be pleased: That score is above average compared with 13- and 14-inch laptops that fall into the same weight class. But a more appropriate comparison may be with business machines of a similar size.

This ASUS replacement battery pack is a 4400mAh, 14.40, rechargeable, removable, Li-ion battery designed to work with ASUS A41-K52. The Hi-Quality battery meets or exceeds original manufacturer specifications for the ASUS A42-K52 Laptop Battery in quality, durability, and performance. Li-ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect.

With its big screen, svelte body, and cutting-edge features, the Dell Latitude Z is a good fit for executives who need to tote it around the office to give presentations or to read from in meetings. Its design definitely screams “suit!” But its high price and mediocre performance make it decidedly unsuitable for middle managers and worker bees. The lesson with this laptop is not to expect the moon based on its high price. Pay careful attention to the features you need, and make sure they match what the Latitude Z actually delivers before you consider plunking down this kind of dough.
